How to Make Glitter Wands for Witches and Wizards!

Get those coats and boots on and head outside for a stick treasure hunt. Gather up some sticks from outdoors. Don’t worry if they are crooked or gnarly old sticks, that just adds to the character.

Gather the sticks up and bring them indoors.

You will need:

  • Liquid paint / paintbrushes
  • Glitter (a pack of a few different colors)
  • Sticks
  • Something to contain sprinkled glitter such as a tray or a table cover / newspaper
  • About 10 minutes (plus time to hunt for the perfect sticks and for the sticks to dry)

Choose a stick and paint it your chosen color. Paint all over the stick and don’t worry about being over generous with the paint, the wetter the better!  You really won’t see all that much of the paint after the glitter is added, but we tried to pick coordinating paint and glitter colors; but really anything would work!

Place the stick onto a surface that is easily de-glittered (if you have glitter in your house you will know what I mean), such as on a tray, newspaper or table-cloth to catch the excess glitter.

Here comes the glitter!

This is the important bit, while the paint is still wet sprinkle on the glitter, turning the stick around until you have covered the stick with as much or as little glitter as you’d like. Ta da! A glittering stick of wonder!

Let the stick dry.  Once dry, the glitter will slowly come off as the sticks are played with, so if you want to go an extra step you could use a spray on sealant to hold the glitter in place.  We didn’t bother because, my daughter loved how a little of the sparkle came off into her hand, “my hand’s are sparkling with magic mommy!”.

Once your kids are done with the sticks they also work great for some added festive decor.

As with all our crafts adult supervision is recommended, while making and playing with the sticks.
